CHARACTER INFORMATION
✘ Name: Belladonna
✘ Canon: Which Witch? by Eva Ibbotson
✘ Canon Point: Before her turn in the competition.
✘ Age: Early Twenties
✘ History: Belladonna was born a white witch in the small, sleepy English town of Todcaster. Unfortunately, as she belongs to a coven of proper black witches, her overall loveliness and penchant for magic that helps instead of harms has made her a bit of a social outcast. And that includes to herself. All she longs for is to belong: to be downright awful and nasty just like all the other great witches that surround her.
Nothing has inspired her to want to be the worst she can be more than falling head-over-heels for Arriman the Awful, the wizard of Darkington Hall, who announced his intention to marry the most evil witch he could find. Now, she's determined to find a way to prove herself despite not having a single bad bone in her body.
✘ Personality:
You're assigned a group project. What role do you end up taking?
Oh, well I supposed I'd take whatever role needed to be taken. I don't really know how helpful I'd be, on account of me being so annoying and troublesome. I think as long as I can stay out of the way, it would really be for the best.
[Really, she's half-aware that she's just as likely to get shoved with all the work while the rest of her group ditches out entirely as she is to get ignored as being useless. Either way, Belladonna's likely to simply be steamrolled. She's never been particularly assertive, and in her desperation to fit in with her peers she'll always duck her head and be a predictable pushover.]
I think it would be quite fun to collaborate with others, but I do so worry about bringing them down.
You have the chance to anonymously send a letter to someone who's wronged you in the past. What does it say?
Well, no one has ever wronged me, so I really don't have anything that I'd say.
[Plenty of people have wronged her, but as far as Belladonna is concerned they've been completely justified in their treatment of her. Besides, she wouldn't want to be rude to anyone. Still, she hums in thought.]
For the sake of the question, let me come up with something hypothetical:
To Whom It May Concern,
I'm writing today to bring to your attention a matter of great importance. First, I would like to congratulate you on such a successfully executed act of malcontent! I so truly aspire to be a similar caliber of spitefulness one day. That being said, however, I'm afraid I must ask that this situation be rectified posthaste, as your actions (wonderfully deplorable as they may be) have had an immediate and unfortunate impact.
Please feel free to answer at your discretion,
Belladonna
Oh, you did say it was to be anonymous, but I'd much prefer to be direct with someone. I know that was vague as I had no particular situation in mind, but I hope it gives you the clarity you were hoping for!
Someone you admire very much has just done something you find reprehensible. How do you deal with the situation?
I would be delighted, of course! Reprehensible, vile behavior is exactly what I admire in others, so it would have been what attracted me to them in the first place. Perhaps this is not necessarily what you were expecting, for an answer? Oh, dear. [Belladonna can't help looking apologetic.] I suppose the situation you mean to suggest is one in which an individual is acting out of character from how I know them? In that case, they'd be acting particularly charitable...it's unfortunate, but even the worst of us have off days. I wouldn't fault them in the slightest, though I'm sure I wouldn't be able to help feeling a little disappointed to witness it firsthand.
If you could achieve all your goals right now, what would your life look like?
Oh! This is a lovely question!
[She thinks about this all the time, so there's definitely an excitement to her voice as she answers.]
Most certainly I'd be a renounced witch--hopefully over all of England, though I'd be happy enough to be infamous in my hometown. I'd keep the people fearful under threat of curse and disaster, have loyal servants that have been conjured from the depths below, and most certainly be living in a dark, dank castle. [Her cheeks turn pink as she gets to the next part.] I'd also like to imagine sharing this life with someone just wonderfully twisted. If I could have such a reputation as a wife and a mother, I don't think there's anything else I'd ever ask for.
Someone tells you all your flaws. What did they tell you, and are they right or wrong?
[Belladonna sighs. She's far too aware of all her faults. The witches shun her for them, after all, so she can't help but be painfully aware of them.]
They're right, certainly, and I already know them well. It's this loathsome whiteness I was born with, you see? It's such a terrible shame--no matter how hard I try, I simply can't perform any acts of ill intent. I'm far too kind, annoyingly pleasant, and altogether an image of goodness. It's not proper for a witch at all. I can't curse or spit or do anything deplorable in the slightest. Would you believe I don't even have a single wart, either? Truly, it's wretched because I'm not wretched! Oh, but it isn't for lack of trying, of course. Every day I wake up with a renewed vigor to work hard at being distasteful.
[She tries to find small goals for herself. Maybe she'll step on a flower, or hope that someone's pie has a soggy bottom! Alas, she's never had any luck.]
✘ Type: Bestial (Insectoid)
✘ Powers:
Color-Changing Camouflage: The body of an orchid mantis contains shapes that resemble that of flower petals in order to easily disguise themselves while hunting prey. Due to the sheer size of her body, Belladonna will be rather hard to mistake for a flower. That said, just like an orchid mantis her semi-translucent body can change colors to react to her environment and blend in. It is ordinarily a mixture of pink and white hues. It's not, by any means, a perfect disguise, but may make her more difficult to spot depending on her surroundings and how still she's standing.
Lightning-Fast Reflexes: While the mantis can hold themselves nimbly still for long periods of time using their four separate legs, their claw-like arms can snap out fast to catch their prey and hold them tight for devouring. These two appendages are long and strong, with spikes alongside their inner length in order to better grip what's been caught. Although her sheer size makes her easy to see coming, the quickness of her reach can be hard to predict and difficult to escape.
Pheromone Secretion: When she's particularly hungry or ready to mate (or both, as it often may be), her body will begin to secrete a pheromone that'll draw prey closer to her. They may find her alluring or simply beautiful like a rare orchid as opposed to sexually appealing, but the end result is the same: disarming her prey, making them more susceptible to suit her needs.
✘ Inventory: A magical mirror that once showed what Arriman was doing at any given point in time. Now it's just a regular handheld mirror.
